Our plants

At Merryhatton we pride ourselves on the quality of plants we sell. In fact, we’re so certain of the quality, that we have a guarantee on our all of our shrubs – so if they don’t grow within the first 5 years, just bring them back and we will exchange them.

Alpines

Our hardy alpine plants are grown outdoors in Cambridgeshire in climatic conditions that are very similar to East Lothian. The Gedney family, who grow the alpines for us, have spent a lifetime building up their expertise in alpine species and we believe they grow some of the very best alpine plants available.

Bedding plants

Our bedding growers are Scottish so the plants don’t travel far to get to our garden centre.  Our growers use best quality seed and perfectly engineered compost, and once you plant our bedding into your container or garden, you can see for yourself the difference that quality makes.

There’s no doubt you can find cheaper bedding plants, but our recommendation is to consider the quality of the bedding and how the plants have been grown and cared for – that’s the difference you’ll see in your garden all season!

Roses

Whartons Nurseries and Ferguson's Nurseries supply our roses and we believe that it is difficult to beat the quality and selection of the roses they produce.

Based in East Anglia with similar climatic conditions to East Lothian, Wharton's are the UK’s largest rose grower producing more than 1.45 million rose bushes each year.

The Ferguson family have been growing roses for decades on their nursery at Kincardine on the banks of the Forth  and we're delighted to have a Scottish rose grower supplying our East Lothian gardens.

Herbaceous plants

We draw our herbaceous plants from a number of reputable UK growers so we can bring you a diverse range of herbaceous varieties.  As with all our plants, quality is the criteria for choosing our suppliers.

From March through to late summer we stock a selection of herbaceous plants in a variety of sizes so that customers can choose the level of maturity that suits them.  Our staff are always happy to help you choose the varieties that are going to be the best for your garden.

Shrubs

Like the herbaceous plants, our shrubs are drawn from a number of UK suppliers  We always source from Scottish growers where possible, and then choose growers depending on their specialism.

We select the varieties that, in our experience, we know are well-suited to the local area.  Our plant area staff all live locally and understand the challenges gardeners face in this part of the world, so they’re always happy to discuss with customers the plants that are likely to give the best results.

Climbers

All our climbers are UK grown, with the majority of them being sourced from New Leaf Plants in the Cotswolds, a family-run nursery specialising in climbers and offering possibly the widest selection of climbing plants in the country.

Trees

All of our trees are grown in the UK, and we have 3 main growers; Frank Matthews in Wales, Growforth in Fife and McLarens in Renfrewshire.  We stock a good range of both ornamental and fruit trees focusing on those that we know are well suited to the domestic garden.

New crops of container-grown trees become available in the autumn, so you'll find the best selection around October.  Container-grown trees can be planted throughout the year although when planted in the growing season they will need to be well watered until established and able to draw moisture from the ground without assistance.
