Choosing a Scottish Grown Christmas Tree

Choosing a Scottish Grown Christmas Tree

When choosing a Scottish grown Christmas tree, you will be supporting local growers and the Scottish economy, reducing transportation and ensuring your tree is disease-free and of good quality.. That’s not to say imported trees aren’t excellent quality, but a Scottish grown tree will have gone through a lot less stress before it reaches your home to be decorated. Christmas tree farming is expanding in the UK, where regulation of the farms ensures magnificent trees have been grown sustainably.

The benefits a Scottish grown Christmas tree

There is something exceptional about a real Christmas tree; the look, fragrance, tradition and enjoying a natural plant in the home. Christmas trees are a renewable resource and help the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen back out into the atmosphere. It's great fun choosing your Christmas tree and looking at all of the various sizes and shapes available.

What type of Scottish grown Christmas tree is best?

With different options to choose from, you might be wondering which one is best. They are all lovely! Each has various benefits and look different. These are some you will find to choose from:

  • Nordmann Fir - the most well known and popular of all Christmas trees in the UK.  Fantastic needle retention means it will last longer in the home, allowing you to put your tree up earlier and enjoy it longer!
The flat, dark green needles are well-clothed on graceful, sweeping branches and overall presents a wonderfully luxurious tree for your home.

  • Fraser Fir -  narrower than the Nordmann, the fragrant Fraser Fir has a beautiful compact, conical shape so you to have a real tree even if space is limited!  The branches are more rigid than the Nordmann's so ideal if your decorations are heavier.  The dark green needles are slightly silvery on the underside.

  • Norway Spruce - the traditional Christmas tree, the Spruce was once the UK favourite but is now less fashionable because it doesn't have the needle retention of the Firs in our centrally heated homes.  It is a fabulous choice if you plan to site it in the garden or an unheated room.  If kept well-watered, a pot-grown Spruce will retain its needles better than a cut tree.

Caring for your Scottish grown Christmas trees- cut trees

Think of it  like cut flowers:

· cut a little off  the base of the trunk and keep in a bucket of water until you are ready to take it indoors .

· use a tree stand with plenty room for water and  don’t let it dry out

· Keep away from radiators and fires—a cool location helps keep your tree look better and last longer!

Caring for your Scottish grown Christmas trees- pot-grown trees

Think of it like a houseplant:

· Acclimatise the plant gradually to reduce the ‘shock’ of warm, central heating - the heat can result in needle-drop

· Place the pot in a saucer of water to provide water for the roots and humidity for the needles, and don't let it dry out

· Keep away from radiators and fires—a cool location helps keep your tree look better and last longer!
